Dressire x Designers : Wimpy Arora

Wimpy.jpg40635168_1948788308746979_4831687403108302848_nLike every other teenager, I decided to pursue my graduation. Soon after, I did my post graduation i.e., MBA in finance. While I always liked to dress up for functions and casual outing, I didn’t really know that my true calling was in fashion lifestyle. At least, not until my sister and I decided to map the length and breadth of Delhi for her wedding shopping.40684313_2133035883602196_702513738883792896_n.jpg

Having visited all designer labels and exhibitions at that time, I was pleasantly surprised to see that my analysis of what’s in fashion and what’s out of fashion was mostly right. After a point in time, I could almost predict the trends of the fashion industry. Coming from a business family that traded in handloom and had an inherent sense of style, I realised that working with fabrics and designs came organically to me. In between all this, I was working with a leading Japanese bank that paid me well and took me across the globe for work. But as they say, you will find happiness where your heart is. And thus began my journey of exploring my love for all things fashion and style.

40527524_518380591908307_5888639242170531840_n

As destiny would have it, I got enrolled for a fashion women wear course in the celebrated Pearl Academy. The academy helped me bring out my skills and sharpen my craft. One fine morning, as I stepped out of my bed to get ready for work it dawned upon me that without wasting a single moment, I must take the plunge into being a full-time fashion designer. Having an extremely supportive family always works to your advantage. A few dinner table conversations and workplace discussions later, it was clear that am going to launch my own very label. With my sister by my side who shared a similar passion as me, we decided to call our label – dresstorybysisters. Within six months of our launch, we had a loyal customer base and had behind us a successful exhibition at The Hyatt. Today, our label has managed to ruffle a few feathers in the industry and we are extremely humbled at the steady growth of our venture. We have a few plans lined up in the coming months and are supremely excited to see how it all unfolds for us. In the end, whatever may be the result, there’s no better living than living your dreams and pursuing your passion.

What is the inspiration behind your designs?

The idea is to keep it simple. Create trendy yet comfortable clothing wear. If your cloth is not comfortable, whatever may be the design, it won’t work.

What are the key elements for you when designing a collection for each season?

When designing a collection we keep in mind the mood, time of the year, the upcoming trends etc. Of course, fabric, color palette and embellishments goes without saying. All of this put together helps us come up with a collection.

40593656_243336403034948_4561210665116631040_n

What challenges did you face when launching your brand?

It would be dishonest on my part if I said there weren’t any challenges. Right from the time the thought came into my mind of launching my own label, there were challenges. Giving up a well paying job, naming our brand, getting a team behind, creating your presence. Far too many to list. But, my family was my biggest support. With their blessings, everything sort of fell in place and we came overcame the challenges.

What are your plans for the future?

We are working round the clock to showcase our designs in an upcoming exhibition.

What do you think are the keys to professional and business success for women in India?

A strong vision, great attitude, perseverance till the end. Irrespective of the gender, you will succeed.

What advice would you give to young women readers who want to follow a similar career path as you?

Believe in your dreams, till the end. As women, we are the source of life. There’s literally nothing that we cannot do.

What sparked your interest in fashion?

That’s slightly difficult. Frankly,, I can’t put my finger to a date, month, year. How I would like to see it is that while I always liked to dress up for functions and casual outing, I didn’t really know my true calling was in fashion lifestyle. At least, not until my sister and I decided to map the length and breadth of Delhi for her wedding shopping. Having visited all designer labels and exhibitions at that time, I was pleasantly surprised to see that my analysis of what’s in fashion and what’s out of fashion was mostly right. After a point in time, I could almost prophesize what is going to be in trend.

What is the biggest lesson that you have learned since you started your company?

There will be turbulence. There would be times when the going would be tough, very tough. Results may be far from what you expected. But in the end, survival will not depend on the numbers but in your own belief that this is a phase and it too shall pass. Don’t give up and brave a smile all through it.

What is the inspiration behind your designs?
As we all know inspiration can come when we least expect it and at times from the most unexpected place . I was inspired by looking at the ritual in the wedding “sola shringar” . The 16 colours make me go crazy and I start to visualise dresses matching to that.

What are the key elements for you when designing a collection for each season?
According to me the first and foremost key is the colour, silhouette and texture of the fabric.
32185629_1885499778169165_7939296627758465024_n
What challenges did you face when launching your brand?
Well abandoning another career and dedicating whole day and night was the biggest challenge. But as they say entrepreneurship comes with a host of challenges. Rewarding challenges, but harsh challenges nonetheless, I faced the same too. Then comes Rule making – It’s fun to be the boss until you have to enforce something. Sooner or later, you’ll have to come up with the rules in your business, from how many vacation days your workers get to what the proper protocol is when filing a complaint about a coworker. These details aren’t fun to create, and they aren’t fun to think about, but they are necessary for every business.

What are your plans for the future?
In next few years, want to see my stores in top 10 countries of the world. In few Asian countries we have already started like Thailand and Malaysia etc.

What do you think are the keys to professional and business success for women in India?
Whatever you do, be different – that was the advice my grand mom gave me, and I can’t think of better advice for an entrepreneur. “If you’re different, you will stand out.”
32169954_1885500068169136_2589549522082332672_n
What advice would you give to young women readers who want to follow a similar career path as you?
My advice to young women is to NOT be overly obsessed with their career path when they start out, to try out different avenues to help them learn what is the best fit. They will know soon enough.”
32169942_1885496738169469_5415252422161334272_n
What sparked your interest in fashion?
I originally wanted to be a fashion designer. During my free times I used to design clothes for Lord Krishna and Radha which made me realize my creative part . And I love to be creative. Always wanted to experiment new things and when I thought about this venture many ideas started floating in my mind.
32159334_1885501888168954_6242083834809024512_n
What is the biggest lesson that you have learned since you started your company?
You are nothing without drive and determination. Two fundamentals of business. Without them, you will be stuck at the start line. These two attributes will drag you out of bed, no matter how bad it gets, get you into work, and push you onwards. They separate the men from the boys, and the women from the girls. They will determine your success or failure. You need them, and if you don’t, you have to develop them.

What is your fashion motto?
Each day is a page in your fashion story. I don’t really believe in any fashion rules, I think fashion is more of self expression – wear whatever you want with STYLE because personality isn’t just the first thing people see!
3 words to describe my sense of style?
An amalgamation of classy, elegant and creating my own signature always!
IMG_3262
The first thing I notice about people?
Smile.
I will most likely form an opinion about someone based on whether or not he or she smiles. Smiling is a universal sign of friendliness, and wearing one makes you immediately more approachable. Think about it. If you need to ask someone a question or are looking for someone to talk to – would you approach a person who’s smiling or one who’s scowling?
A warm and inviting smile goes a long way. It is a quick and easy way to let people know that you are friendly. Smiles welcome people. They build trust before you ever speak a word. When you first meet people, ensure you greet them with a smile to avoid being judged as rude or disinterested.

If I could go back to any fashion era in history, the one I would choose is….  ?
I would choose the Peshwa era..I loved the makeover of Deepika Padukone and Priyanka Chopra in Bajirao Mastani because of the grandiose demeanor which was reflected through the make up artistry and the gorgeous attires!
At the end of the day, what would you want your wardrobe to say about you?
My wardrobe should speak “A blend of The Systematic Stylist and Trend Trailblazer!!”
She is an organized woman in every aspect of her life, from her categorized closet and inspirational boards to her calculated shopping trips. She is at ease taking fashion risks but does her homework to achieve fashion perfection. She is energized by novelty, always looking for ways to push her comfort boundaries and aims to create looks that no one else has seen before. She has a diverse wardrobe that is organized like a work space to facilitate the creative process.

Capricorn1 copy 2
Naav is handcrafted traditions from the heart, converting into contemporary tales.”

True to this statement, Naav- a contemporary clothing brand is a blend of new era designs and the traditional art.

The vision and mission of Naav is to not just make mainstream garments but to have each of its apparel depict a story which goes behind the process. This makes it more special, not only in appearance but one should be able to feel it. They do not create designs just to sell it but the idea behind it is to show the hard work it takes to make one masterpiece.

untitled shoot-8713 copy 2.jpg

Avneet Adwani has been working in the fashion industry for the past 17 years, she has witnessed a lot of changes in the world of fashion and culture. Despite working with different people around the globe, she is still attached and rooted to our culture and its authenticity. And so she took a step towards designing the garments with the precious art and creativity. She believes in simple and classic work, which reflects in her designs, combining handcrafted motifs and process with new culture designs.

untitled shoot-9104 copy 2.jpg

Preserving the great Indian art and also being close to nature, Naav is into creating sustainable designs. Blending the traditions with western culture, giving it their innovation and keeping in mind the new fashion. Creating apparels that connect to the people making them feel good about it, encouraging the artisans to learn new aspects and to not just hold on to the old techniques which are passed on to them from generations is what Naav is all about.

untitled shoot-0836 copy

Avneet Adwani is a big supporter of women empowerment. She says that her inspiration are these women working with so much hard work and talent along with taking care for their family and children. This is what makes each of her garment worth it.

untitled shoot-8533 copy 3.jpg

“One of the reasons of starting this brand is to uplift them and give them employment.” says Avneet

untitled shoot-1045 copy.jpg

“Everything comes with experience and going step by step is what I do and will do”

untitled shoot-1035 copy.jpg

What sparked your interest in fashion?
I have always loved fashion, I can design in my dreams too. I was fortunate to work in our family business to pursue my passion.
untitled shoot-0990 copy.jpg
How would you describe your brand?
Naav-  Contemporary and hand crafted styles. I like to make outfits which are timeless. I love getting inspirations from old embroideries, art works and different cultures.
Hand embroideries and block prints are our USP.
We are making all efforts towards making Naav an eco friendly brand. We have stopped using plastic bags and use only paper or Bio degradable bags. We are also making efforts towards using organic dying and printing.
Employing women in Barmer (borders of Rajasthan) for hand embroidery, giving them employment and enhancing their talent is the most satisfying.
untitled shoot-0949 copy.jpg

What is the inspiration behind your designs?

Each time I plan a collection, something connects very deeply to my love for old art work, age old embroideries and regenerating dying techniques somehow gives my design sensibility a direction.
untitled shoot-0894-2 copy
What are the key elements for you when designing a collection for each season?
As I said, I just go with the flow. I love to use hand block print and hand embroideries which are done in Barmer.
untitled shoot-0868 copy
What challenges did you face when launching your brand?
I have been in the fashion industry for over 15 years as our family business is garment export. I have been designing for brands across the globe.
I have always felt the urge to have my own label but with Naav, I have been very impulsive.
One fine day, I decided to just go ahead and start. The brand name is all our family initials, even the logo is designed by my daughter who’s 10. With that, I was good to go. Challenges are always there, it is what makes you keep going. I had great response with selling online but one year down the line, I still got messages everyday from people who insisted on seeing the collection personally. I still haven’t gone ahead with a store.
untitled shoot-0865-2a copy
What are your plans for the future?
Naav is a almost a year old, now I feel it is good time to expand. I would be looking to set up a store soon. I also have options of various multi brand stores, who would like to collaborate.

What advice would you give to young women readers who want to follow a similar career path as you?
Follow your dream, start small if required. Make your passion your work, then it will never be work. Also I feel you should keep life going in various directions. As women, we have various responsibilities, nothing should be compromised. There is always a way out to balance various roles.
I have 3 kids and I never stopped work. I remember bringing my one month old babies to work. There is always a way, if we decide to do it!

What is the biggest lesson that you have learned since you started your company?
There is a lot to learn and we are always evolving. For me, I have had issues engaging the crafts people which we have employed in the villages. To keep them busy and employed, I had to be organised to send them work. Also working in villages in not an easy task and needs a lot of patience. I am also working towards making an all women Naav team.

What is the biggest lesson that you have learned since you started your company?

What are your plans for the future?

I want to establish my brand name in the fashion industry, I want my brand to start getting accepted beyond the city I operate.  I always want to stay original and I believe the best marketing technique is through word of mouth – it’s the hardest to achieve but it tends to work the best.
